The Ford B-MAX is the proof, if needed, that Ford knows a thing or two about people designing carrier. Its bigger brothers of the Ford C-MAX, S-MAX and Ford Galaxy are all excellent seven-seat MPV that are impressive car-like to drive. But while the B-MAX is a mini MPV that only five seats it has sliding rear doors, which are a very practical addition usually found on cars one, two or even three classes above.
factor in the B-MAX low list price, generous headroom and a pleasant driving experience and you are left with an excellent family car that comfortably outclasses its nearest rival the Vauxhall Meriva, Nissan Note, Kia Venga and Hyundai ix20.
Because it to go based on the Ford Fiesta, the B-MAX a very pleasant and competent car. While it developed a touch more slender body in corners than the Fiesta, is the overall driving experience is more like a hatchback than an MPV and the B-MAX even B-roads, highways and city streets acquittal admirably alike on twisty, with lots of grip and precise steering.
The outstanding features of the B-MAX, but his two sliding doors are rear. These make access to the rear seats excellent and mean that parents no concerns have dinging other cars' doors when rings uncooperative children. There are in the rear seats in crowded parking lots to ensure no B-pillar as between the front and rear doors so in the rear passenger compartment leaning dropped toys to pick up, and the like is also a breeze.
Ford has the B-MAX with a diesel and three petrol engines - although the 1.0-liter petrol in three performance levels and the 1.5-liter diesel with 74 be or 94bhp ordered. the entry-level 89bhp 1.4-liter petrol and diesel engines 74bhp best be avoided if you do most of your driving in the city, because they are too weak and make the B-MAX ponderously slow. 0-62mph takes an inconspicuous 13.8 seconds with the base gasoline and a really tiring 15.1 seconds, if you choose the less powerful diesel. The 1.6-liter petrol engine has a reasonable performance (0-62mph takes 12.1 seconds), but this is only with an automatic transmission and is relatively thirsty 44.1mpg returns and costs £ 145 per year tax thanks to CO2 emissions from 149g / km Realistic.
, then the sensible option is the 94bhp diesel engine, if you cover many miles or excellent by Ford's turbocharged 1.0-liter EcoBoost petrol, if you do not. The 94bhp diesel engine still takes 13 seconds from 0-62mph to go, but it is easier than to live with the 74bhp option. Fuel economy is also impressive, with 74.3mpg and low CO2 emissions of 98g / km for both diesels importance of B-MAX is cheap to run and road tax free. The only restriction here is the price: while the B-MAX is attractive cheap, the 94bhp diesel in higher trim levels is available, allowing you to spend more than £ 5,000 and above the starting price, if you want it
there is better news with the engine 1.0-liter EcoBoost turbo. This is with 99, 123 or 138bhp and can be given in mid-range trim levels and above. In 99bhp form the 1.0-liter engine 55.4mpg versa, while the 123bhp do not work as hard, so it again 57.6mpg. The top-spec 138bhp 1.0-liter petrol is between these two, with the fuel consumption of 56.5mpg.
Whichever power the EcoBoost engine costs just £ 30 per year in road tax to choose. The performance is more appropriate than sparkling, with 0-62mph under 13.2, 11.2 and 10.4 seconds, depending on whether you are connected for 99, 123 or 138bhp engine.
inside, headroom is excellent thanks this high body, while the seats you relatively upright, make footwell sitting importance is also generous. There are cubbies and cupholders galore, and while the dashboard is covered in buttons (stereo particularly so), there is a decent sense of quality and primary controls (heating, windscreen wiper, and the like) operate conventionally and with sufficient strength.
, the 318-liter trunk of the B-MAX about 80 liters of a Vauxhall Meriva is shy, but this is for a little through the rear seats (which fold completely flat) compensated and the back of the passenger seat that folds the to facilitate loading of objects more
the B-MAX is available in four trim levels available, starting with Studio and rise by Zetec, Titanium and Titanium X -. although Zetec models are also available in red, white and silver figures that come in colors to match their names suggest, with a contrasting gloss black roof. The basic studio is best avoided: it comes with steel rather than alloy wheels and, although you get a DAB radio, it is the unassuming is 1.4-liter petrol engine only available
Moving by Zetec to cost about £ 1,800. and makes all engines the 138bhp petrol available bar. It also adds 15-inch alloy wheels, an excellent heated windscreen, upgraded headlights and Ford SYNC system, Bluetooth phone connectivity features and allows voice activation of your phone and music collection.
Unless you really want a gloss black roof and 16-inch alloy wheels, the expenditure of £ 800 or so asks Ford for the Zetec red, white and silver issues seem superfluous - although note that these are the only systems where the 138bhp 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine to get well and automatic wipers and lights.
Titanium cars 16-inch alloy wheels get a front armrest, cruise control, a gloss black grille and power folding mirrors. With approximately 1,0 £ trim more than the well-equipped Zetec, though this seems an expensive package of options. Titanium X trim, now you have to spend a further £ 1,0 or so, and for a panoramic sunroof, keyless entry and go, Tinted rear windows, heated front seats and leather upholstery part.
We recommend the engine 123bhp EcoBoost mid-range in Zetec trim. These keep the price of the B-MAX to a reasonable level, while the extra kit and power just to make the car to live with on a day to day.
The Ford B-MAX performed reasonably well in our 2016 Driver Power customer satisfaction survey, ranking 76th (of 150 cars). Owners praise the way the B-MAX and practicality, although a 130-space for reliability less impressive. There is no such security concerns, though, as the B-MAX five out of five scored in its Euro NCAP safety tests.
